Excellent Value for Little Cash
I have used one for years in my Amateur Radio projects. It has seen a LOT of daily use, only replaced iron once and tips a few times. Gave one to my daughter for her "keebing" activities. If you want better, you will have to spend a lot more cash. Hint: When replacing the handle ( 15861 TL), keep a separate iron around so you can do the soldering inside the temperature controller. >>> An Excellent Value!

It does the job, but... | ||
Its inexpensive and does the job but... The cord from the iron to the base is a little short and stiff so you might be fighting that when trying to do a precision solder joint. The base is relatively light and moves with the iron cord. The distance between the tip and where you hold it is quite long, too long. That makes for a long lever-arm and more difficult to control the tip placement, especially if trying to do any close tolerance soldering.

Made a world of a difference!
Prior to purchasing the ZD-99 from MPJA, I had used two different economy type irons for my through hole soldering projects. My results were marginal at best and quite often I would end up with a cold joint or an ugly mess. The ZD-99 has made soldering so much easier and I havent had a cold joint yet. I am very impressed with its performance as well as its value. It bears mention that I modified the station by utilizing a panel mount fuse holder with a 500 mA fuse on the brown grounding wire circuit. The bottom of the unit is easily removed by locating the four screws under the rubber feet of the station. There is plenty of room to mount the holder and enough slack in the wring for a quick and easy installation.

Great general purpose solder station
I use this iron for everything other than boards with tightly packed components. Plenty of power for components that are heat sinked or working inside of electric guitar cavities where multiple wires have to be tack-soldered to the back of pots. Ive owned 2 Weller stations similar to this in the past and they were great stations but very expensive! This station does everything that they did for a fraction of the price. Tips are easy to change and readily available too.

Great for model railroading
I have gone through a couple of tips. The price point is outstanding and the unit is very reliable. If and when it finally dies, I will buy another. Parts are readily available through MPJA!

Awesome | ||
Best 15usd you will ever spend. Buy a spare soldering pencil, and a few extra tips.
Great value | ||
Agree with others, nice unit, just wish it would heat up faster, but I cant expect them to be as good as a $1000 unit. For the price it is great

Finally gave up after 18 months of daily use
Great unit for Model railroading, NS track to HO decoders, been very reliable. Over that time frame, it consumed two tips and finally the nut that holds the tip on failed. Will replace!

Great little station | ||
I have been using these solder stations in my high school classrooms for about a decade. The fact that MPJA still sells them with the same part number is a good indication they work well and are robust. The tips are easy to replace. Great for students!
